Breastfeeding in the News

There are lots of news stories about mothers choosing to breastfeed in public. Some are positive stories of strong moms who stand up for what they believe is their right, while others face persecution for doing something that is deemed inappropriate. These are not my stories, just a way for me to share what others have been through...

Natalie Hegedus Courtroom Breastfeeding Debacle

November 16, 2011's Huff Post Parents shared this article about a Michigan Mom who was "kicked out" by the JUDGE because she was breastfeeding her son while in a court room.

Grand Rapids-based WOOD TV gave some additional information and offers the transcript of this courtroom encounter in their article, which goes on to explain that Hegedus was not actually asked to leave the courtroom, but rather reprimanded for nursing in an "inappropriate" place.

I think what upsets me the most about this article is that, according to Michigan Law (or lack-of-law), the judge has every right to ask her to leave. While breastfeeding in public is not illegal in Michigan, the law does not protect nursing mothers from people asking them to leave or move to another location if they are nursing. What do you think?

Proposed Law to Protect Nursing in Michigan Public Places

The Grand Rapids Press published this article on December 5, 2009, about a law that was proposed in Michigan to protect mothers who are nursing in public places.

Unfortunately the bill did not pass in 2009, but there are many other bills in the works for Michigan Breastfeeding mothers.
